In 2019 I adopted a puppy named Charlie who was being rehomed, and got more than I’d bargained for - anxiety, fear and later, leash reactivity to dogs. I was committed to giving Charlie a great life so I started learning all that I could about training and behaviour modification through books, blogs, podcasts and youtube videos. The more I learned and applied what I learned, the more passionate I became and the more I wanted to be able to help other dogs and their owners. To make a long story short, I reached out to Emma at Walk With Me Ottawa in 2021 to apply for the apprenticeship program so I could get in-person, hands-on education and turn my passion into the ability to help other people and their dogs. I began providing pack walks and in-home boarding with WWMO and completed my Apprenticeship in 2022. Now, I work with WWMO as a full time trainer, helping other pet owners better understand their dogs and be able to provide the best lives they can for their dogs. I can remember “training” my grandparent’s lab to walk around the yard nicely with me when I was very little. My interest in dog training really peaked when my family got a Dutch Shepherd in 2020 who had severe behavioural issues. Working with him sparked a love for dog training. I went to University, and started my career on another path but in March of 2023, I got a golden retriever puppy we named Jersey. I thought it would be easy since she was a golden! Jersey was reactive, and I was in over my head. I reached out to Walk With Me Ottawa for training help, then, I signed up to apprentice with Walk With Me Ottawa. I have since graduated, and became a full time Dog Trainer. Through multiple cities and multiple dog businesses, I knew that this was something that I was very passionate about. It was through my job at a kennel that I first found out about WWMO when I had an audit spot for a workshop that they were hosting; this was a business I absolutely wanted to be a part of. I reached out to Emma about the mentorship program and adopted my rescue dog, Becca. My knowledge and practical skills with dogs grew immensely throughout the course of the mentorship, and I watched Becca flourish into a confident and spirited dog - a huge contrast to how she began the program. I grew up with dogs of different breeds and temperaments, and began volunteering at my local SPCA as soon as I was old enough. It wasn't long until I started bringing home cats, bunnies, and other small critters to care for as well. When I moved away to Ottawa for University, I began boarding dogs once I had my own place. In 2019 I centered my thesis on the role that animal-assisted therapy plays on specific behaviours in people, and hoped to continue in a career that revolved around dogs and their positive impacts on our lives. In 2022, I joined Walk With Me Ottawa as a walker and pack leader. Walk With Me Ottawa is where I gained immense practical experience and developed skills in handling, behaviour management, and pack dynamics. I was interested in training and learning more about dog behaviours immediately. Seeing the improved relationships and freedom that training provides was aspiring and something I wanted to help bring into more families. He was reactive to both people and dogs, struggled with separation anxiety, and I truly felt like we had tried everything. Through training, I not only saw Pancho transform, but I also discovered a passion for understanding canine behaviour and the incredible bond between dogs and their owners. What started as a personal journey quickly grew into a career dedicated to helping dogs and their people build clear communication, confidence, and lasting relationships. My goal is to help every owner feel supported throughout the training process and to show them that meaningful progress is possible.
